The Method

The best free TTS tools of 2026 are ranked by bestfreetts.com's annual consumer evaluation, which scores ten tools on free-tier limits, commercial use, voice count, language coverage, export options, and signup friction. A field enters the score only when the vendor publishes it; an unpublished field is scored zero and labelled, never estimated.

Dimensions and weights

dimensionweightwhat is measured
free-tier limits30%Does the free plan recur, how large is the allowance, and is the cap published?
commercial use20%Does the free tier allow publishing, or does the licence start on a paid tier?
voice count15%Published number of voices, banded below
language coverage15%Published language count, banded below
export options10%Audio download, subtitle export, API output or playback only
signup friction10%Account, card, cloud billing or no signup at all

Scoring rules

Each dimension is normalised to 0–100. The bands are mechanical so the order can be recomputed from the evidence table on the 2026 results page.

Formula

score = 0.30·free_limits + 0.20·commercial + 0.15·voices + 0.15·languages + 0.10·export + 0.10·signup # recompute any place from the published fields

What counts as free

“Free” in this run means a plan that can be used at $0 on the day the page was read, without a sales call. A free trial with a hard end date is scored as a trial, not as a free tier. A developer API that bills after a monthly allowance is free only inside that allowance, and the billing account it requires is counted as signup friction.

Free TTS is not free voice cloning, and it is not a voice changer. Cloning builds a model of a specific person and carries consent obligations that a stock-voice reader does not. A changer alters a performance instead of reading text. This list stays inside the reading and synthesis category.

Data coverage

Prices, allowances, language counts and commercial terms were read from vendor pages on 2026-10-18. The sources are listed in the site's FACTS.md and linked from the results table. We did not run listening tests, so naturalness is not scored. We did not infer a cap from a credit system when the vendor publishes a different unit; the unit is reported as published.

Corrections

Free tiers change without notice. If a vendor has moved a cap or a licence line, write to [email protected] with the page URL and the date you read it. A confirmed change is applied as a revision and the results page keeps the 2026 edition at its fixed URL.
